Anti-Social (media)

by Jessica on February 12, 2013

Well, that’s that! My social media fast is now complete. After one week of no Facebook, twitter, Pinterest, blogging, etc. I am both happy and sad that it’s over. The first couple days, it was really hard to get used to. It made me realize how often I “just check something” or “read a blog really quick” on my phone. I kept picking up my phone, like a reflex, and having to make myself put it back down. I did decide that TV was totally okay to watch once the kids were in bed, so I did that (because I am now obsessed and totally caught up with Downton Abbey), but it was off while they were awake. There are a few changes that I am going to stick with, including keeping all social media apps off of my phone. Why? Because it’s too dang tempting to check 875 times a day when they’re that accessible. If someone needs to talk to me, they can call me or text me. I will check my social media stuff during non-family time!

I loved not having the TV on all the time in the evenings. We have gotten into the bad habit of having it on as “background noise” and regardless of how we’re using it, it still manages to distract the heck out of our kids. Turning it off was a welcome change, and one that we will stick with. Knox’s Autism really allows him to get sucked into technological things, and not in a good way. He gets very obsessive with electronic devices, so we have started to only allow him a certain amount of time with his toy computers/ phones/ etc. Having the TV on was doing the same thing, so we are trying to get back to only allowing him an hour of TV a day, like we used to do before Brody was born. We played with his Play-Doh ice cream shop a lot this week, and it is so funny to watch him pretend that he’s eating a “yummy eye quee cone.”

Now, the big question: did I cheat at all? Kind of. I did check one blog because I HAD to (Erin’s) check on her progress and make sure everything was still good! Isn’t it funny how we can become so invested in our blog friends’ lives? I did also check the Facebook page of the job I applied for to see if anything was going on with that (still haven’t heard back after three interviews… talk about frustrating!!). But that was it, so all in all, I did pretty good!

Hopefully I can blog for the majority of the upcoming week and catch you guys up on my riveting life (ha!) and talk some about Brody’s upcoming birthday party- I cannot believe he is ONE tomorrow! Crazy how fast time goes by. I hope you guys had a good week, and I am happy to be able to talk to you again!

Great job!! I don’t know I could do all of that at once!!! We are definitely trying to keep the tv off more. I borrowed some Disney CDs from my neighbor and burned them so we can play music for background noise and not have the tv on. Good luck!!!

That’s a great idea for music!

OMG! How hard was that to do??? Luckily, my addictions are just the blogs (including yours) I read every morning, Pinterest, and Instagram. I’ve stopped checking Facebook a long time ago and we rarely watch TV in our home. Speaking of Downton Abbey, I swear you look just like Lady Mary…has anyone else commented on your resemblance?

Welcome back!

When I read your post last week I knew I had to try this. Not now…but sometime soon. I know I spen too much time online & my phone but I see it as “my” time (I am a SAHM to two). I wish my “me” time was spent outside of my house doing something really fun, but such is life! I will give it a try soon. You rocked it but we missed you!
