Recovery

Thank the Lord, Brody’s hypospadias repair surgery went well! It was an anxiety-inducing day, but he did great. Surgery took just under an hour (which felt like about 20), and everything went as planned. The surgeon said Brody has a good-looking wiener now. Yes, that’s what he really said. Though it looks a bit worse for the wear right now, poor guy! The surgeon came in right after and told us how everything went, then a nurse came and got me to see Brody in recovery.

When I walked in, a nurse was holding him up on her shoulder as he blinked very slowly. They said he was already awake when they wheeled him into recovery and vehemently refused a bottle of sugar water. I’ll tell you what he didn’t refuse: me! The nurse asked of I had a bottle in my bag, and I told her “nope, but I’ve got boobs!” She said she now knew why he was so mad about that bottle! The second I picked him up, he was ready to eat- he wouldn’t even wait for the curtain to get pulled closed. I fed him and he immediately fell asleep. We sat there so he could be monitored for an hour. Then, they pushed us, still leaning back in our recliner, to a room. After about 45 minutes in there, they sent us home! Brody didn’t cry until we were leaving but passed out again after five minutes or so.

He’s on pain meds and antibiotics right now and seems to be feeling very well. We have to double diaper him, to prevent stool from getting into his catheter, for a week. Basically we cut a slit in a swim diaper (they don’t leak all that chemically goo pellet stuff when you cut them like a regular diaper) put that on and stick his bandaged penis/catheter through the hole. Then we put a normal diaper over the top to catch the pee.

I’ve been shocked at how happy and awake he is. We both took a short nap when we got home (glorious), and he’s napped off and on but nothing crazy. Hopefully he will sleep soundly tonight so he’s well rested. I’m so thankful and grateful to God that everything went well today, and I’m just trying to keep him as comfortable as possible. Thanks so much for all of the prayers for Brody- they are so appreciated!

Tomorrow is Knox’s first day of preschool- I will tell you about his eventful orientation day later on… That kid is a mess!

This is Brody snoozing in recovery:

I’m glad everything worked out so well! Years from now, in the locker room, he’ll be glad he has a nice looking… well, you catch my drift. Praying that everything goes well with his healing and with preschool tomorrow!
