I have been mildly obsessed with home decor, lately, and do a lot of flipping through decorating catalogs. My favorites, Ballard Designs and Pottery Barn, are full of great ideas, but tend to be super expensive. I’ve been searching forever for something to put over our couch, and found these at Pottery Barn.

They’re vintage ceiling tiles, and I am in love with them. But not so in love with the price tag of $99. Granted, in Pottery Barn land, $99 is certainly on the low end of the pricing spectrum, but I thought I could do better.
I picked up these tiles at Hobby Lobby a few years ago (they always have some kind of ceiling tile-ish art work in stock in various colors- I saw red ones last week) for 50%. I always look for the “damaged” ones and get some extra % off of the price for teeny dings. Especially if you’re painting them over, dings save $!
They have a similar look, but the color scheme was wrong. I grabbed a bottle of Krylon spray paint in “Ivory” satin finish and gave them a good four coats of paint. When they were dry, I used a sanding block and gave them a quick once-over. I ended up with this:
Pretty darn close, if you ask me! And for the price of a bottle of spray paint, not a bad deal!

Way to go crafty, thrifty mama! Now you have to find something new to hang in the dining room?
Those look great! I wish I was that creative..
I hope your weekend went smoothly!!
I love it! I’m quite a faker, myself *smirk* but you take the cake! Those tiles rock!
Thank you for sharing!
You did such a fantastic job on those! I love how they turned out! I always get giddy over bargains etc! I will need to start taking tips from you! WTG girl!
Love it – that is a great job! I will totally check that out!
Those look awesome!
I have to say I much prefer your version!!! They look much more stunning!

I love your tiles so much more than PB’s! Great job!
These are adorable!
How do you get $$ off for damaged goods? I see them and know I should get something off, but feel weird walking up to the counter and saying “these things are damaged…” and not knowing what’s going to happen. Should I ask for a discount or is it understood that they should give me one?
Jennifer, I just ask at the register. I’ll say “this has a ding, can I get a discount?” Generally, they ask the manager and do it without issue. Even for tiny little things, you usually get at least 10% off. Worth a try!
And thanks to everyone for the sweet compliments!!
Thanks for sharing this! I was just looking at these on PB’s website today. I’m looking for something for above our bed in the master bedroom. I didn’t want to spend the $99 at PB and knew there had to be a way to “fake” them. I am going to Hobby Lobby in about a week (we don’t have one in my city) and will get some and a can of spray paint. Thanks!!!
