I think Knox is addicted.

by Jessica on March 9, 2010

Being held is not an option. It is the LAW. The kid will NOT allow you to set him down. Period. If he is asleep, great, he can be swaddled and put to bed. If he’s awake, you WILL hold him. No questions asked, thank you very much.

Today, he had a complete meltdown when I tried to take a shower. This is not a new thing, and it generally takes me a good two hours to actually get around to a shower if he’s awake, but today’s freak out was extra frantic. He was bright red, screaming at the top of his lungs, gasping for air, I thought about filming it to show you guys, but obviously, he needed to be picked up really quickly before he combusted. I have no idea how people let their kids cry it out. I am not a fan of that method. If it worked for you, great, but I just think I would be physically incapable of doing it. It breaks my heart when he gets that way, and knowing I can fix it by just picking him up, I would be hard-pressed to just let him wail.

I am concerned how this holding addiction will play out next week when I go back to work (dreading it, by the way). I am lucky enough to work for family, so my little guy will be tagging along with me to work. My mom works with me, and I work for my stepdad, so he will have a little fan club right there in the office. However, I have a feeling we’re not going to get much done considering Knox is going to be passed from person to person all day long, knowing how he rolls. Should be interesting.

This face pretty much sums up why I will do anything to keep him happy. He is so freaking cute, I can’t stand it!

This face says “Damn you, woman, pick me up!”

Have you tried a sling or carrier? That way he will still be close to you but you will have your hands free? Keating loves mine. I know the screaming you are talking about. He gets so pissed that he gets a rash!

We have the same child. It's exhausting…but I'm the same way. It won't last forever, and I'll miss it when he doesn't want me to hold him anymore, so I'm trying to enjoy it. Meanwhile, it's 4pm and I just brushed my teeth for the first time today. I'm a hot mom, I'm tellin' ya.

BTW – so jealous Knox can go with you to work. I return in early May (taking 4 extra weeks unpaid because the thought of returning on 4/5 gave me a near heart attack). Kevin and I have been touring daycares and the thought of handing my baby over to a stranger has had me physically SICK all week. I don't know how I'm going to do it.

I hear ya girl on CIO! We ended up doing it when our boo was 4 months old and on the advice of our pediatrician. (And just at night too) But it took 2 horrible nights of doing the Ferber method and it was sooo worth it. He now sleeps from 8p – 7a! It is awesome!
But no, you would never do it with a baby as young as Knox! So, cuddle that sweet boy as long as you can!

A sling saved my life. My guy insisted on being held also….even better than the sling for us was the baby bjorn.

He will grow out of this stage, but it's just something about the name Knox. My oldest was the same way and his name is Knox too. I just hope your last name doesn't start with an H. Otherwise these two will have the same initals! (Knox's middle name starts with a C!)

I'm glad to hear you are nursing! I am still nursing my second and he's a year old, but only at night. Hampton eats everything he can put his hands on!

I see you're from South Carolina. I live in Georgia right on the Carolina line. We live so close that we get South Carolina news stations instead of Georgia!

Check out my blog–www.frugaltractormom.blogspot.com–to see my two cuties!

Love to hear from you and keep in touch! And keep up the nursing–you can do it!!

Such cute photos, sorry about the shower. Don't have kids yet so I am not sure what that is like. So until then I am going to keep showing for 20 minutes. " )

Oh my goodness, Knox is SO CUTE I can hardly stand it! You're pretty lucky to be able to take him to work- I'm totally jealous! (Although, since I work in x-ray, it might not me the SAFEST environment to have the kids in all the time!)
Good luck going back, hope it isn't too rough!

Ditto on the sling / carrier…Weston loves his too, and I can keep him close while still getting things done, so it's really nice! On another note, I often think that Weston is the opposite. He likes to be put down and sit by himself and stare off into space. And that sometimes drives me crazy! I'm jealous too that Knox can go to work with you!! :(

Our little guy was the EXACT same way at that age!! I agree wtih Mrs. Southern, give a sling or our favorite, the moby a try! With the moby they are wrapped so snug, it almost kind of tricks them into thinking that they really are being held, but you still have use of your hands. We love that thing.

Oh the expeience of a been there done that Mom has advice!

#1 Do you have a miralce blanket… seriously it works magic and brought my son months of joy being swaddled during the day and even when asleep :)

#2 Do you have a baby sling, if not run do not walk to Babies R Us, slings are awesome and allow you to have the baby close to you but use two hands again!

As Knox grows he will get used to being put down and take things in…

I totally concur with the suggestion to try a sling. I loved my Ergo when C. was younger but thee are all kinds of options out there.

Stella Kate went through that also. Thank goodness she finally got enough head control at around 3months for us to be able to put her in the Exersaucer (with a blanket rolled up and tucked around her to help keep her steady). That slowly helped her to learn to entertain herself, and she can stay in there for 10-20 minutes now!! I drag it into our bathroom so I can take showers all the time. As far as work, I definitely agree with trying your Moby again (even though I read your post about him hating it). I use a Baby Bjorn and SK likes it even more than the Moby. Will he sit in a swing and look at a mobile? Just trying to help you think of ideas haha. Just another month or so and it will get easier, I promise!! :)
