Help.

by Jessica on January 27, 2010

What in the HELL-O do you do for this insane perineal pain?!! I had a second-degree tear and am at the end of my rope. I am fairly certain that I have a UTI, as well, what an awesome combination. My doctor’s office called me in a prescription for the UTI and guess what… bold letters on the bottle said “DO NOT USE IF BREAST FEEDING.” Awesome. I called back and sure enough, not safe to use. Now, I am paranoid that any medicine might interfere with Knox’s heart meds, so I’m worried to take anything.

Any natural remedies?? I’m doing the peri bottle, Tuck’s pads, Sitz baths and Dermaplast spray. Help, help, help!

I had the same problem with my first kid and the sits baths really helped. I think I did it three times a day, then drink some cranberry juice for the UTI, other than that I think you are doing pretty much evrything I used to do. Hope you fell better. Congratulations on your baby

I'm prone to UTI's (ugh) hot water in a tub has helped ease the sting/burn sensation and the urge to constantly pee. That's the only remedy I know you can do without taking any oral meds….poor you! I feel for you!

What I have been told to do p/p is get some pads and witch hazel. Poor some of the witch hazel on the pad and freeze it. (Don't pour so much on that it makes the pad useless, obviously.) So many people swear by it that it feels WONDERFUL. Like, lifesaving wonderful. I already have my pads in the freezer waiting. I found the witch hazel at walmart by the wound care/ peroxides. 2$ for a huge bottle.

I would recommend drinking pints of cranberry juice mixed with water for the UTI. I once had Hemorrhagic cystitis (nasty), and this was what my doctor advised. I sat on the toilet for about 3 hours just drinking and peeing. It wasn't very pleasant, but the cranberry really worked. The cranberry actually inhibits the activity of bacteria and the large volumes of fluid help to flush out the urinary tract.
Good luck! xXx

take a washcloth, wet it (use water or witch hazel), stick it in the freezer until it's almost frozen (but not totally stiff)

stuff it into your undies right in the vag area (get it nice & comfy)-exhale. zomg.

you'll feel much better, i promise.

First of all, Knox is amazingly adorable! Congrats for getting him home. I bet you are so happy and just swirling in love.

As for your predicament with your stitches, I have to say that it took me a good month to walk normally. I had a second degree tear and I don't know how many stitches, but man it was painful! And hemmies too. I found that the best thing to work for me was the earth mama bottom balm. It has a cooling sensation that was so nice and I put it on every time I went to the bathroom after using the water squirter thing. Their nipple butter is much better than lanolin too IMO. They sell this stuff at babies r us too so it's not so hard to get, though amazon has it too. It's awesome.

Good luck with the UTI though, I don't know about that since I've never had one, but I guess just drink a lot of water. I am sure you are doing that already since you're breastfeeding.

Enjoy that little guy. He is going to grow faster than you could even imagine.

I want to snuggle him so bad!

Have you tried ice diapers? That really helped me. I used them constantly!

Oh no…I don't have any advice or suggestions, but I hope you get some relief soon. I didn't have any tears or anything, and I'm in terrible pain, so I can't imagine what you are feeling!

Are you able to take Motrin? My doctors gave me Motrin in the hospital (hospital strength) while I was breastfeeding. If not, what about Tylenol for the pain? I'm not sure about the UTI, though…

For the UTI, you should be drinking lots of cranberry juice. And at some point, you'll have to take some antibiotics. A UTI can make you really sick.

No idea what to do about the other. :( Good luck finding a solution!

I sat on ice packs…

Unfortunately, nothing really helps enough. I think it took until about 4 weeks for the pain to finally ease off. I'm sorry!

For UTI, I know drinking cranberry juice is good at preventing them, but I read that drinking it while you actually have one can make the pain worse.. just so you know.
I'm sorry!

Oh girl, I feel your pain. I had the same issue after I had my baby. My doctor gave me a two prescriptions that I could take while breast feeding. I know one was an antibiotic and I think the other was for a yeast infection (I only had a UTI, but it helped so much). I took my pain medicine for the first few weeks too.

You poor girl. All I know are c-sections so I can't offer advise, just sympathy!

I'm not sure about the tear, but I usually find that a UTI is relieved by drinking excessive amounts of water.

I truly feel for you! I had a 2nd degree tear 5 weeks ago with the birth of my daughter. My nurses gave me the "cocktail" and it worked wonders! First get an ice pad and line it with the tucks…all the way from the front to the back. Then get some proctofoam and put it on top of the tucks. Then use your dermoplast spray. I swear this works!! For me it was the proctofoam that made the biggest difference so ask your nurse for some. I also used tylenol for the pain. If you have any questions, e-mail me! Good luck!

Ouch! I tore upwards & it was not too fun if you can imagine that :( I did everything you are doing so I can't recommend anything else. Hopefully you heal faster than I did… it took me 8 long weeks to not hurt anymore!

The last time I had a uti, I drank some water mixed with baking soda and it made me feel so much better, it doesn't get rid of it but it somehow makes the urge to pee go away. (Here's one link to info on it: http://www.mothernature.com/library/bookshelf/books/19/234.cfm)
